The untimely passing of a friend, partner, and co-worker no matter their life form is accepted without protest. This natural occurrence changes nothing except begets the end of new experiences or episodes to share together leaving only memory.
Shadow was consumed by a fast spreading cancer, which attacked the lower portion of her urinary bladder forcing the Doctors treating her to the only humane decision.
Shadows life started in the Tonopah Test Range as a Mustang until her capture, thus forcing the introduction into a domestic life style without self-choice and sometimes-cruel minutes or owners.
In my search for a new horse, Shadow quickly bonded with me during our first introduction, due primarily to her personality she made it impossible to turn my back on. In 1997, Shadow began teaching me with an eager and willing spirit both of us embarked on our new life. This started a friendship from day one with complete trust offered by both parties, which continued during her life.
In 2000 with the conception of the Nye County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Enforcement Unit, Shadow embarked on many challenging adventures to present. Her years of service to Nye County & the Nye County Sheriff’s Office included activities of ambassador, Honor Guard, Special Events, Search & Rescue, and training which, at times commenced in Las Vegas with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Mounted Unit and due to her performance during our joint training sessions, LVMPD MU has replaced mounts with Mustang.
The demise of Shadow is a great loss to the Nye County Sheriff’s Office and me personally.
