On September 18, 2006 the Nye County Sheriff’s Office was informed of a possible telephone scam.
The Sheriff’s Office was told that the reporting party had received two (2) phone calls from two (2) heavily accented people (possibly Latin American or Dominican descent). In both cases the persons calling claimed to be with MEDICARE and knew the reporting parties name and mailing address. The person calling said they needed the bank account number of the reporting party so that she could get her new MEDICARE CARD sent to her. The reporting party said that over the phone she heard commotion in the background similar to telemarketers’ sounds. No information was given to the caller as the reporting party hung up on them.
In the event you should receive similar phone calls, hang up on them and contact MEDICARE as soon as possible to verify the call.
The Nye County Sheriff’s Office is urging people NOT to give out personal information over the telephone or Internet in this or similar instances.
